it initally defaults to "Print to File" with the print button active. If
I click on any of the printers listed (note that they are listed) then
the print button goes grey (and stays grey even if I click back on
"Print to File").

I've tried both the FQDN and the ip address in client.conf and the
server is listed in /etc/hosts (and ldap, and dns), nsswitch is
configured thus:

hosts:        files dns ldap
