Hi,
Alan Dipert has put NCSA Mosaic on gitHub:
http://github.com/alandipert/ncsa-mosaic
The installation instructions work for sid as well as ubuntu.
Since it was released it crashing on png's has been fixed.
I cloned this and ran it but the experience was rather marred by
in-line javascript and styles being displayed, indeed the picture above
is a little tricksy, as Alan has scrolled down so that you do not see the
mess of javascript.
No knowing git and not having used c since 1994 I knew that this was an itch that needed scratching.
So I forked Alan's code to
http://github.com/timp21337/ncsa-mosaic
Installed CDT and git in Eclipse.
Added script and style tags as comment type tags, committed the lot, including
the Eclipse project files.
My version is usable, but still has some issues, mostly around location headers,
and I don't think it likes ssl.
The Mosaic experience is very relaxed, much of the hype of the current net just disappears.
The best comment in the code, wrt page background images:
/* WE SUCK. We're a bunch of pathetic followers. */
/* ABSOLUTE CHEEZE OF THE FINEST KIND - bjs - 9/21/95 */
Also the original misconception with regard to SGML entities, which was copied into IE, but not Netscape:
* GAG: apperantly < etc. can be left unterminated, what a nightmare.
cheers
Tim
