This is really just a primal scream in digital form, but I though it
might be of benefit to other list members.
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to get ADSL broadband provided by
work, the downside being that I was expected to do out of hours support
on a 24x7 basis in return for it. Not a big deal, as I found it a good
incentive to make sure my systems worked well. Along with the
broadband, work also provided a Draytek Vigor router.
When I subsequently left that job, the router was returned and I
switched back to the Demon broadband that I'd kept so that I wouldn't
have to change my personal email address. I also bought a D-Link
broadband router. The thing dropped the Internet connection frequently,
but on calling the manufacturers help line I was assured this was to do
with the recent increase in Demons bandwidth and the typical BT line not
being able to cope with it. I eventually replaced the D-Link with a
Belkin router when I switched to wireless, and this router exhibited the
same flakiness concerning dropped connections.
Cut to four years later, and the Belkin dies on me. Recalling how neat
the Draytek had been, and feeling unusually flush with cash, I shell
out for a current model of their Vigor router. And guess what? In the
two weeks since, the dropped connections that I experienced every two
to three hours with both the D-Link and Belkin routers have gone away.
>sigh<
