Horizontal lines indicates a hardware (graphics screen driver) failure...I don't know your machine, but I suspect this means replacing the mother board....
Don't shoot me.. I'm only the messenger..

I hope someone can help because I'm a bit stuck. My Acer Aspire X1935 running Ubuntu 14.04 keeps freezing/crashing intermittently.

The screen freezes with horizontal bars across it. No input is accepted and the only way I can turn the machine off is at the wall. This also happens in Win 7 and even in grub, which suggests hardware. I've run memtest which didn't find a problem. The system isn't running hot and the logs don't appear to show anything obviously wrong. The graphics are integrated. Before I look at replacing the motherboard I suppose the main question I have is:

If it's a graphics issue, would installing a dedicated graphics card get round the problem or am I a bit stuffed with the graphics being integrated?

Any advice would be much appreciated - the machine is only 2 years old.
