Oxford English Dictionary talk on Thursday (see below).
And don't forget to come along this Sunday and be part of our first
InstallFest - even if you can only spare half-an-hour come along and
don't miss out on the fun!
There'll be lots happening and it'll be a great opportunity to meet in
person many of the names you regularly read on the mailing list!
Dominic and his team have put a tremendous amount of time and effort
into the preparations, and the more people you're able to bring along
and encourage to use Linux the bigger a success it will be!

Dear Mr Kergon,
I am dropping you a short reminder that the April BCS Oxfordshire Branch
meeting is on this coming Thursday (26 April 2001) at 7:30pm.
This meeting is a combination of the Branch AGM and the election of the
Branch committee (Please see later on), swiftly followed by the main
presentation.
We are very pleased to have Laura Elliot, who is OED (Oxford English
Dictionary) Technical Project Manager from Oxford University, give the main
presentation called OED on the Internet.
Laura will be presenting details of the history of how the 20 volumes of the
Oxford English Dictionary was put online, and the difficulties that were
encountered and how they were overcome.
The OED Online is now the worlds leading authority on the history and
development of the English Language.
We will be handing out CPD certificates at the end of the presentation. If
you haven't already done so, it would be a great time to start your CPD
records.
Please look at the web site http://www.bcsoxon.org/calendar/april2001.html
for a brief description about this presentation.
We will be holding the meeting at the Wolfson Building, South Parks Road,
Oxford. Please use the link below to see a local map.

***** BRANCH AGM - NOTICE AND INVITATION TO MEMBERS *****
Each year the Branch must hold its AGM (Annual General Meeting) to inform
you how the Branch is progressing, and how your subscription fees are
accounted for. It is also a time when you can ask us questions and also
give feedback on any items you would like us to include in next years
programme of events.
It is also the time when the Branch Committee is elected. This is a great
opportunity for anyone of any grade from student through Fellow to have
their say within the Branch.
Serving on the Branch Committee involves attending approximately 4 meetings
a year (about 2 hours) to discuss and organise the Branch Meetings and other
events the BCS are involved in. It is a great way to meet people within the
BCS, and for those considering application for full BCS membership, then it
is a chance to meet people who may be willing to act as sponsors once they
have a chance to get to know you.
All we ask is that anyone wanting to be involved with the committee to email
me to indicate their interest as soon as possible, and to be willing to take
an active roll in contributing new ideas for the BCS Branch.
or if you require more information please email mailto:events@bcsoxon.org
We look forward to seeing you there,
Neill Lawson-Smith
Branch Chairman
----- End forwarded message -----
As you may already know, OxLUG are involved in a nationwide Linux Day this
Sunday, and we are holding an local event. See
http://www.oxlug.org/linuxday/ for full details.
The day is fast approaching, and we would like to see a good number of
people turning up to the event. While the focus is on new installs of
linux, we'd like to encourage people who already have Linux on their
systems to come along with or without their machines for help in fixing
miscellaneous problems, chatting to people and generally having fun.
We are also going to be having some informal talks by some of our resident
experts, and hopefully they will interest people who've already taken the
plunge as well as those who are just about to! If you would like to come
along for any reason, please let us know by either filling in the form at
http://www.oxlug.org/linuxday/register.html or email events(a)oxlug.org.
I encourage people to forward this message to as many interested people as
possible, as time is running out!
Thanks,
--
