Web Programming - Ganesh Sittampalam This will be a general introduction to server-side web programming. It will start with the ubiquitous CGI interface and various methods of programming to this interface, and go on to discuss other interfaces such as mod_perl, HTML::Mason, Embperl and Safeperl. Valgrind - Julian Seward - Sunday 1st Sept 6.30pm

Valgrind: An Open-Source Memory Debugger for x86-linux - Julian Seward Valgrind is a GPL'd tool to help you find memory-management problems in your programs. You can use it to debug more-or-less any dynamically-linked ELF Linux x86 executable, without modification, recompilation, or anything. It works by translating x86 code to instrumented x86 code, on the fly i.e. a virtual machine. Valgrind can detect problems such as: * Use of uninitialised memory; * Reading/writing memory after it has been free'd; * Reading/writing off the end of malloc'd blocks; * Reading/writing inappropriate areas on the stack; * Memory leaks - where pointers to malloc'd blocks are lost forever; * Passing of uninitialised and/or unaddressible memory to system calls; * Mismatched use of malloc/new/new [] vs free/delete/delete []. Julian Seward is a Compiler hacker and open-source contributor. Worked recently on the Glasgow Haskell compiler, GHC, which is under a BSD-style license. Also the author of bzip2 (data compressor), cacheprof (a tool for locating the sources of D-cache misses). As we've discussed a few times before, we're starting off a series of talks to follow on from the Installfest. Many details of the organisation remain to be ironed out, so get involved in the discussion on the main list if you are interested, but for now we'll start off with the following: Sunday 18th August, 2002 - 6:30pm, Comlab I'll give (probably fairly short) talk on remote access to and from Linux (and indeed UNIX in general) with VNC and X. I'll go through how to get the necessary software, what each can do, and how to use both with Linux as either a server or a client (or indeed both), as well as how to use Windows as a client. After that we'll have a general question and answer session where hopefully you'll be able to get advice on any problems you're having with Linux. Internet Rights Updating society for the Information Age Paul Mobbs Sunday 4th August, 2002 6.30pm, Comlab Paul Mobbs will talk through the issues surrounding our rights - or rather the lack of any rights - to access and use networks for communications and organising socially. He'll provide an update on current legislative changes and the possibilities of people getting involved to lobby for digital rights - e.g. the new Communications Bill. Finally he'll also talk about the role of free software in Internet rights and mention some specific community initiatives such as the 'Community-Linux Training Centre' ---------------- The meeting will (as always), be followed by drinks at the Lamb and Flag. Tuesday 28th May - GNOME - Michael Meeks, Ximian Inc.

Michael Meeks, one of the lead GNOME developers, who works near Cam|(!#*@, has kindly agreed to give a joint OxLUG/CompSoc talk tomorrow evening at 8.30pm in Comlab. I appreciate it is a late mid-week starting time for many of you, but Michael is a superb speaker and linux enthusiast, and we are privileged that he is visiting us; so please do make that extra effort to come along if you possibly can! I would like him to take away good impressions of the thriving Linux community that we have in Oxford:-) This talk will present the latest and greatest, smaller, faster and more beautiful Gnome 2.0 desktop environment; and explain why this is going to be the platform of choice for Unix Vendors and ISVs for the next 5 years. You will catch a glimpse of the power of the new environment, and the (fading) glory of the exciting things still happening on top of the Gnome 1.4 platform. You should come away inspired with the vision of an accessible Free software desktop. Michael is a Christian and enthusiastic believer in Free software. He very much enjoys working for Ximian Inc. where as a member of the Research Labs he gets paid to develop Gnome 2.0 infastructure, particularly ORBit2 and Bonobo, and play with interesting things. Prior to this he worked for Quantel gaining expertise in real time AV editing and playback achieved with high performance focused hardware / software solutions. InstallFest Raffle etc.

Thanks to everyone who came along and helped to make yesterday's 2nd OxLUG InstallFest another big success. We held a raffle to raise funds to cover the costs involved in putting on the event - prizes included items kindly donated by O'Reilly, SuSE and the Linux Emporium. The winning raffle tickets were (E&OE): 11 23 27 36 42 48 68 74 86 103 Winners not present when the tickets were drawn should contact me (agk(a)oxlug.org) to confirm prizes & make arrangements for collection e.g. at the OxLUG meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) evening or next Sunday evening. We are confident we covered our expenses (incl. hut hire, phone bill for internet, refreshments etc.), raising a total of a little over 140 pounds; any money left over when all the bills are in will be carried forward to support future OxLUG events.
