Abstract:
Robert J. Chassell, founding Director and Treasurer of the Free
Software Foundation, will speak on the nature of free software. The
nature of free software is such that it can be modified and
redistributed at will. Chassell will discuss application to the
business of writing computer software and to the wider software
landscape as a whole. He will also speak of the dangers inherent in a
world where we increasingly see our freedoms and rights being
compromised and how free software can make a difference.
Robert Chassell writes and edits. He is the author of "Programming in
Emacs Lisp: An Introduction". He graduated from Cambridge, has his own
aeroplace and an abiding interest in social and economic history.
Apologies for the late notice of this event, but we've only just confirmed
it.
On Tuesday 16th May, Steve Whitehouse will talk about the Global File
System. 8.30pm
The GlobalFileSystem is a journalled, fault-tolerant, clustered file
system. It provides a high-performance solution to many applications
where reliability is of foremost concern. The talk will centre upon
the applications of the GlobalFileSystem and will also cover the
implementation and describe how it interacts with the Linux kernel.
Steve Whitehouse is a software consultant running his own company
(ChyGwyn Limited) which mainly takes on contract programming work
on Open Source and Linux based projects. He is also in the final
stages of writing up his PhD thesis on "Error Resilient Image
Compression". Steve first became involved with Linux when he
was an undergraduate at the University of Wales, Swansea where
he was an active member of the computer society. Steve maintains
the Linux DECnet kernel code.

Subject: BCS Branch Meeting - BCS Intranet Winner - Its This Thursday!
Organization: British Computer Society
BCS Branch Meeting and AGM
-------------------------------------------------
I am just dropping a short note to invite you to this Thursday's (20th April
2000) BCS presentation and AGM at 7:30pm.
We are pleased to have Mr David Nurse MBCS, Head of Research of CSW
Informatics Ltd to present and describe a Web based Clinical Intranet based at
the Oxford Radcliffe Infirmary.
The Oxford Radcliffe Hospital is a large teaching hospital which has used
Internet technology to solve some of the information needs of clinicians. An
Intranet, which took first place in the 1998 Information Management Awards
sponsored by Computer Weekly and Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group, was
developed using a thin-client architecture with cross-platform ability. This
gives clinicians access to patient information, assembled as a single view,
from information held on multiple remote and disparate computer systems.
Access to existing support and advisory information from within the
organisation and collected from other sites and projects is also provided as
is automated retrieval and presentation of information which is contextually
appropriate to the component of the record being viewed by the clinician.
The system will be described and, in the light of experience, its wider
potential in the NHS will be discussed.
CSW Informatics Ltd are consultants in information management using SGML/XML,
Internet/Intranet, Workflow, using relational and object databases.
Next Thursday is also very important as it is the Branch AGM. It is a
fantastic opportunity to learn more about how the Branch works, and more
importantly for you to play a part in its ongoing success. It is also a
chance for you to vote for your committee for the next 12 months.
We will be holding the meeting at the Wolfson Building, South Parks Road,
Oxford. Please use the link below to see a local map.

UK Linux Developers' Conference
Linux for the Enterprise
London
Friday 7th July
to
Sunday 9th July 2000
Building upon the successful conference at Aston last
summer, the UKUUG is holding another conference for Linux
developers this July. It will run from Friday 7th July
until lunchtime on Sunday 9th July 2000 and take place in
Hammersmith in West London.
With interest in Linux growing rapidly amongst computer
professionals and businessmen alike, now is an excellent
time to consider the developments underway that will help to
make Linux the platform of choice in the Enterprise.
The organising committee (which includes several members of
OxLUG) is seeking additional speakers to address the
following themes from a developer's point of view:
The Enterprise Desktop
The Enterprise Server
Integration with other operating systems
Other topics likely to be of interest to Linux developers
and enthusiasts will also be considered. The organising
committee can be reached at linux2000(a)list.ukuug.org
The provisional programme includes:
GNOME Miguel de Icaza &
Michael Meeks
Global File System Steve Whitehouse (OxLUG)
High Availability Stephen Tweedie
Linux Volume Management Heinz Mauelshagen
Memory Management Rik val Riel
PowerPC Clusters Adrian Cox (OxLUG)
VMware John Edwards
For further information about attending, sponsoring or
exhibiting at the event please contact the UKUUG office on
01763 273475 or ukuug(a)ukuug.org.
Booking information will be available early in May.
Watch http://www.ukuug.org/events/linux2000/ for the
latest information.
Sunday evening's meeting will now be about VMWare.
The Firewall talk has been postponed.
VMware is commercial software which allows you to run several operating
systems simultaneously in separate virtual machines on a standard PC.
The talk will be given by John Edwards, European Marketing Director.
** Please note that this meeting will take place at Trinity College. **
The entrance is through a small door just to the right of the large gates
half-way along Broad Street.
And any students on this list, there's just still time to enter the
Linux/Open Source Foundation's competition, with prizes of up to 2000
pounds for innovative ideas for internet applications.
See my message of 26th Jan, or http://www.4linuxjobs.co.uk/
for full details.

Subject: Who pays by Ferryman? - BCS Oxon Meeting - Its This Thursday!!!
Dear Mr Kergon,
I am dropping you a short reminder that the October BCS Oxfordshire Branch
meeting is on this coming Thursday (16 March 2000) at 7:30pm.
With E-commerce via the Internet being one of the fastest growing
technologies, The Food Ferry is one of the longest established home-gocery
shopping businesses.
The Food Ferry have built up an enormous bank of knowledge and experience in
the art of telephonic and e-commerce transactions; in enlightened customer
service at-a-distance; in local fresh food supply chains and in direct
delivery into the customers' home. Everything they do is handled by their
computer systems and they are dependent upon the internet for an increasing
percentage of their business.
James Millar, Strategic Director for The Food Ferry will be giving a general
presentation on who The Food Ferry are, what they do and what methods and
systems they use in converting experienced supermarket-shoppers into
ecstatic home-shoppers.... and then retaining them.
We will be handing out CPD certificates at the end of the presentation. If
you haven't already done so, it would be a great time to start your CPD
records.
Please look at the web site
http://www.bcs.org.uk/branches/oxon/events.htm#seven for a brief description
about this presentation.
We will be holding the meeting at the Wolfson Building, South Parks Road,
