In the past 18 months UKUUG has organised an exciting series of free evening presentations given by world-renowned speakers such as Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond. We are now pleased to announce that the next evening presentation will take place on Wednesday, 4th October 2000. Speaker: James Gosling, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Vice President and Sun Fellow Title: From Emacs to Java to ? The talk will give a perspective on how and why the Unix software developer's life has and hasn't changed over the years; looking at what led to Java and what today's development community needs next. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session. OxLUG Meeting: Sunday 3rd September - 6.30pm, Computing Laboratory On the eve of the launch of FreeservePlus Home, Steve Clarke will discuss what ADSL is, what products are available for Linux users and what the future may hold. Chris Evans will discuss some of the new features in the 2.4 kernel. Weather permitting, this meeting will again be preceded by a picnic in the University Parks (Parks Road) opposite the Computer Lab, from about 16:30 onwards. Please bring your own food along. The meeting will (as always), be followed by drinks at the Lamb and Flag. Hi, It would seem that there is some confusion over the time and place for the talk to be held later today. I have previously sent this announcement which clearly states the correct details, however, I hope you will forgive me for sending it again to distill the resulting confusion. UKUUG Linux 2000 conference, 7-9 July, London

The programme for this conference is now available at: http://www.ukuug.org/events/linux2000/timetable.shtml Nine of the speakers are flying to London especially for the conference, and once again several OxLUG people are playing active roles in organising the event - and two will be speaking. The line-up includes: Miguel de Icaza (GNOME) Hans Reiser (Reiserfs) Rik van Riel (Memory Management; 2.5 kernel development) Rasterman (Performance programming for X) Stephen Tweedie (Clustering; Ext3) Wichert Akkerman (Package Management) The event is spread over 3 days this year, and daily rates are available. A 50% discount available for students. It is necessary to be a member of the UKUUG to attend. (There is an institutional membership covering students and staff of Oxford University.) There will be exhibitors on the Friday and Saturday. (Including O'Reilly offering a discount on their books.) [Mid-Month Meeting] Drinkies

Hi, There will be an informal Mid-Month OxLUG social meeting at the Lamb and Flag on Wednesday 21st June (tonight) at 20:00. The meeting is an additional event which has been organised over the last couple of days and does not replace or otherwise affect the regular meetings. We will be at the Lamb and Flag until at least 21:00 or so, at which point the meeting may move elsewhere. If you turn up after 21:00 and we appear to have moved to get food or go to a different pub, please give me a ring on the Mobile number below and I'll let you know where we are.
