Note that 2008 Ig Nobel UK Tour are nearly upon us: 6th March, Martin Wood
Lecture Theatre, 1930.
National Science and Engineering Week website says:
"National Science and Engineering Week (formerly National Science Week) is an
opportunity for people of all ages, areas and organisations to take part in
science, engineering and technology activities."
IgNobels are awarded for science that makes you laugh and then think. E.g. For
example "Scrotal Asymmetry in Man and in Ancient Sculpture"[1] and "An
Analysis of the Forces Required to Drag Sheep over Various Surfaces."[2].
Need to book tickets online or queue on the door (finite number of seats).

Like The Great Prophet Zarquon said "a few things cropped up at the last
minute" so December's meeting is postponed one week to 9/12/7.

Geek Night:

He also says:
We really want to get the local geek scene (especially outside the
university) more active, and connecting all the disparate groups
together seems one way to go. With any luck we might be able to
bootstrap a local Barcamp in the near future:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The full timetable for this event is now online at:
http://www.linuxconf.eu/timetablehttp://www.linuxconf.eu/programme
The technical programme is particularly strong this year because the
annual invitation-only Linux Kernel Developers' Summit visits the UK
developers from around the world are arriving early and taking part in
our conference. Please don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to meet them and make them feel welcome in the UK!
The conference dinner is on Sunday evening, after which Dr David
Hartley, a former director of the Cambridge University Computing
Service, will offer a personal view of the development of computing
in Cambridge University.
On Monday evening we're visiting the air museum at Duxford, with its
Concorde.
There is the opportunity to take Linux Professional Institute exams
on Tuesday afternoon.
Topics covered in the tutorial stream are: SystemTap, RDMA, Cell
Programming, Linear Programming, GIT, RPM, High Availability, Chip
Development and Ruby on Rails.
If you wish to come, please book ASAP - the official deadline is Friday
17th August - and mention the event to any friends and colleagues who
might be interested!
Prices are shown on the website and there is a 25% discount for UKUUG
and XML UK members. O'Reilly will be offering books at a 35% discount.
N.B. There are also still some discounted places available for students
or linux developers who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend.
Please contact me (agk(a)linuxconf.eu) or office(a)ukuug.org if you want
more details.
It is possible that some OxLUG people will be interested in this
week's wonderful CompSoc talk. You're all more than welcome, and it's free.
DBIx::Class and Catalyst
========================
Wednesday, 16th May
20:30
Denis Sciama Lecture Theatre,
Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Rd. [0]
Matt Trout will come and give us a run-down of tips, tricks and
available modules that serve to make Catalyst [1] internationalisable,
localisable, capable of dealing with a wide variety of domain models and
templating systems.
Topics covered include:
- URI mapping flexibility
- Supported environments
- Models
- Views
- Authentication stores
- UTF8 and internationalisation
- Javascript
- Mad plugin foo (laundry list)
There will be someone outside the DWB to let you into the talk; if you
have never been before, it's up the large concrete steps at the end of
Keble Road, and round the corner.
For those who can't be bothered to use links, Catalyst is
a web development framework, implementing such acronyms as MVC and ORM,
and is written in Perl. Come along to see shiny examples demonstrating
just how nice web application development has become.
Hi all,
The server which runs the OxLUG mailing lists, stanley.ox.compsoc.net,
will be down on Friday 13th March, between midday and 6pm, while we move
it from Leeds to its new home with Community Internet [0].
Sorry for the fairly short notice,
Hi,
I suspect that some OxLUG people might be interested in this week's
Compsoc talk, which is tomorrow. You're all welcome, and it's free.
AMD Virtualization and Barcelona (Simon Cole)
=============================================
When: Tuesday 6th March, 20.00
Where: Keble College, Pusey Room
Simon Cole, who spoke to Compsoc in Michaelmas 2001, returns to give us
an overview of AMD's on-chip virtualization technology, and introduce
their forthcoming "Barcelona" quad-core processors.
The Pusey room is on the Pusey Quad, roughly opposite the lodge.
http://www.keble.ox.ac.uk/about/tour is a fairly good map. Someone will
be hovering in the lodge to point you in the right direction in any
case.
If you're interested, various Compsoc-type people are meeting at Noodle
Bar on Gloucester Green[1] at about 18.40 to eat with Simon. Drop me an
email or an SMS if you if you have any questions about meeting up.
