Details for the talk this Sunday are as follows: ************************************************** Open Source at fotopic.net Gareth Ardron Sunday 16th January 6.30pm Venue: Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road (entrance at corner of walkway up concrete steps) Afterwards: In the Lamb and Flag, St Giles' ************************************************** Fotopic.Net was born from the minds of husband and wife team Joel and Nicky Rowbottom, and began life on 2nd August 1999 as Photos.jml.net: as with all good ideas it arose out of a laziness on Joel's part for publishing images from their new digital camera. As time went on, more and more people asked for either copies of the engine which ran the site, or whether we could run a gallery for them... so eventually we gave in and wrote Fotopic.Net. The site is the culmination of several years of work, together with an almost fanatical obsession with digital photography. During our fourth year we expanded the facilities to include multiple image formats, direct publishing from the new generation of mobile phone cameras, a variety of PDF facilities, live thumbnails, fast image processing, and the most configurable photo gallery system to date. We've also survived the so-called dot-com crash which left many other photo sites without users.

Details for the talk on Sunday are as follows: ************************************************** User Mode Linux as a hosting platform Paul Warren & Chris Lightfoot, Mythic Beasts Date: Sunday 5th December Time: 6.30pm Venue: Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road (entrance up concrete steps and turn left) Afterwards: In the Lamb and Flag, St Giles' ************************************************** As the name suggests, User Mode Linux (UML) is a user-mode implementation of the Linux kernel. The result is a light-weight mechanism for creating virtual Linux machines. One of the more obvious and successful applications of UML is hosting virtual Linux servers, allowing users to take control of their own Linux installation without the expense of buying and maintaining their own server hardware. This talk gives details on the workings of UML and also describes the integration that we have done to implement a UML hosting service. Along the way, we will cover a diverse range of topics including: * Network bridging * Logical Volume Management (LVM) snapshots, for backups * Filesystem image manipulation * Sparse files * Bandwidth monitoring using MRTG We will also cover a number of tools that we have written, and (in most cases) released as open source projects, including: * blocksync, a utility for performing fast network backups of filesystem images * consolidate, a logging console manager * our server management scripts ... and explain how all this open source goodness fits together to make a viable hosting service.

Food has not been agreed yet but I shall be in Oxford this afternoon and am open to suggestions - I will try to announce anything beforehand or can be called directly on the following number for updates to the schedule when it's sorted: +447776131337 I am hoping some people will suggest a good curry house for us to meet in before 19:30 for some food. However for those SMEs who do not have any in house ICT support there is little or no knowledge of the open source movement. Our research shows that not only is this true but network connectivity in certain parts of the SME sector is falling. Conclusions drawn from this could be that SME's are not choosing to adopt B2B applications or that the plateau has been reached. This talk will focus on results drawn from our research and ask the audience for their views on what open source can do for an SME moving into B2B.
