Alasdair IT General Computer Controls and Sarbanes Oxley (Deloitte) Date/Time: Wednesday 5 Feb 20:30 Place: Denis Sciama Lecture Theatre, Denys Wilkinson Building (on Banbury Rd & Keble Rd) The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 is legislation enacted in response to the Enron and WorldCom financial scandals to protect shareholders and the general public from accounting errors and fraudulent practices in the enterprise. Ryan Loughins from Deloitte will explain the effects of SOX on the way we conduct business, as well as how embracing the spirit of the law, strong ethics, good governance, reliable reporting, will reap the benefits of a re-energized company and reassured investors.

We have two talks lined up for this meeting. The first is by Robin Rowe. Robin is the founder of LinuxMovies.org (an association of motion picture technologists), the project manager of CinePaint, and was a columnist for Linux Journal. His talk is based on Linux and CinePaint and titled "OSS in Motion Pictures" The second speaker is our own Jason Clifford. Founder of UKFSN.org (an ISP which dontates all its profits to the support of Free Software). The short talk is on making a home video using consumer kit on Linux (DV camcorder, firewire, kino, output to VCD/DVD). -------------------------- After the talks we'll be heading over to the (5 minutes away) Green Man Pub for drinks and then off for food at a to be decided restaurant. A British Computing Society event tomorrow: Open Source: turn on the LAMP Alan Lenton (ibgames) Thursday 10 Nov 19:30, Computing Lab ------------------------------------------------ In the last ten years Open Source software has come from being an 'interesting' plaything for hobbyists and geeks into the mainstream of business computing. The success of Open Source has been built on the rock solid components of the Linux operating system, the Apache web server, the MySQL database, and a scripting language whose name starts with 'P' - Perl, PHP or Python, depending on your religion. These components are commonly known by the acronym LAMP. This talk will look at the LAMP components, as well as Linux distributions and some of the strengths and weaknesses of Open Source software, and strategies for deploying it in business. This talk will introduce the concepts used within autotools and an example autotools based project to demonstrate these concepts. Jon Masters will introduce the world of "Embedded Linux" and attempt to demystify some of the current developments. Following a general introduction, a more advanced look will adress the increasing use on Linux in SoC (System-on-Chip) and programmable logic devices, with the aid of a Xilinx programmable FPGA development kit running a Linux platform. Jon Masters is an Embedded Linux engineer who works for a number of companies on Linux and other embedded projects. He is also author of the monthly "Small World" and "Kernel Hacking" columns in Linux User & Developer magazine. Martin will give an overview of common quality issues found in both large and small free software projects, and discuss strategies and techniques which can be implemented in a free software project to ensure quality and to maintain a stable quality process. Martin Michlmayr is the current Debian (Linux) Project Leader and has been involved in various free software projects for about 10 years.
